History
|
|
|
|
The first inhabitants of Saquarema were hunters and collectors (mollusks, fruits, seeds, etc).
The pond and the sea, most likely, attracted those people,
as we can see by the "sambaquis".
About 1530 the Portuguese arrived in Saquarema and
adjacent territories, in 1594, so did the first priests.
In the end of the 17th century the coffee
culture stood out in Saquarema.
In 1841 Saquarema had it's political-administrative
emancipation and in 1890 it was recognized as a city.
One of the given versions for the origin of it's name is from Tupi-Guarani "SOCOREMA", that means "POND
WITHOUT SHELL". |
